Capstone Project: The Autonomous Humanoid

Introduction

The Capstone Project for the Physical AI & Humanoid Robotics course culminates all the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the curriculum. It challenges students to integrate various components of AI and robotics to create an "Autonomous Humanoid" capable of understanding high-level commands and executing them in a simulated environment. This project serves as a practical demonstration of embodied intelligence.

Project Goal

To develop a simulated humanoid robot that can:

  1. Receive a voice command (e.g., "Robot, please fetch the blue cup from the table").
  2. Process the command using advanced AI techniques (Speech-to-Text, Natural Language Understanding).
  3. Generate a cognitive plan to achieve the goal (e.g., plan a path to the table, identify the cup, grasp it).
  4. Navigate complex environments, avoiding obstacles.
  5. Identify and localize specific objects using computer vision.
  6. Manipulate objects (e.g., pick up, place down) with its simulated hands.

Key Components to Integrate

1. Voice-to-Action Pipeline

  • Speech Recognition: Utilize tools like OpenAI Whisper (as learned in earlier lessons) to convert human voice commands into text.
  • Natural Language Understanding (NLU): Employ LLMs or custom NLU models to interpret the intent and extract entities from the transcribed command (e.g., intent: FETCH, object: blue cup, location: table).

2. Cognitive Planning

  • LLM-based Planning: Use LLMs (as covered in previous lessons) to translate the high-level interpreted command into a sequence of executable ROS 2 actions or skills.
  • Action Primitive Mapping: Map LLM-generated high-level skills to specific ROS 2 actions (e.g., navigate_to_pose, detect_object, grasp_object).

3. Navigation and Obstacle Avoidance

  • ROS 2 Navigation Stack (Nav2): Implement path planning and local navigation capabilities.
  • Sensor Integration: Use simulated LiDAR and depth camera data (from Gazebo/Isaac Sim) for obstacle detection and environment mapping.

4. Computer Vision for Object Recognition

  • Deep Learning Models: Train or adapt models for object detection and recognition (e.g., identifying the "blue cup").
  • Sensor Data: Utilize simulated camera feeds from the humanoid for visual perception.

5. Manipulation

  • Inverse Kinematics (IK): Calculate joint angles for the simulated humanoid's arm and hand to reach and grasp the target object.
  • Grasping Strategy: Implement a robust grasping strategy considering the object's properties.

Simulated Environment

The project will be conducted in a physically accurate simulation environment, such as Gazebo or NVIDIA Isaac Sim. This allows for safe and repeatable testing of complex robotic behaviors without the need for expensive physical hardware.

Learning Outcomes

Successful completion of this capstone project demonstrates proficiency in:

  • Integrating AI (LLMs, computer vision, planning) with robotics.
  • Developing and controlling humanoid robots in simulation.
  • Implementing voice-to-action systems.
  • Applying ROS 2 for complex robot behaviors.
  • Understanding and addressing challenges in embodied intelligence.
